Saves move between devices in the same ecosystem (Steam to Steam, Xbox to Xbox on PC). They do not move between ecosystems. Steam Cloud is on by default, Xbox Play Anywhere handles the Microsoft side, and Game Pass piggybacks on Xbox Play Anywhere.
In short. Same account on Steam, same save anywhere. Same Microsoft account on any Xbox surface, same save. Steam to Xbox is a hard no, and Unknown Worlds has not announced a fix. For Early Access, keep a manual backup before each patch — cloud is the convenience layer, not the safety net.

Steam Cloud, in practice
Steam Cloud is on by default. Settings → Cloud lets you turn it off globally or per game, but most players should leave it on.
Uploads happen on game close. If Steam shuts down without a clean exit (force quit, power loss), the local save may diverge from the cloud copy.
If a sync conflict is detected on launch, Steam shows a dialog with the timestamps for local and cloud copies. Pick the one you actually want; "newer" is usually right.
Storage cap is per game, typically 100 MB to 2 GB depending on what the developer requested. Subnautica save files are small, so the cap is not the practical limit.
Family Sharing accounts can read your save when borrowing the game, which can quietly overwrite your own save state if you do not log out cleanly.
Xbox Play Anywhere, in practice
Xbox Play Anywhere syncs the save file across Xbox Series, Xbox on PC, ROG Xbox Ally, and Xbox Cloud Gaming, as long as you sign in with the same Microsoft account.
The sync is two-way, but only one device should be running the game at a time. Two simultaneous sessions can produce a conflict that the system resolves by keeping the most recent upload, discarding the other.
Cloud saves live in the Microsoft account on Xbox infrastructure, not a per-device drive. Removing the game from one device does not delete the save.
On Xbox Series, save files are not user-accessible — there is no file system view. Backup means copying the save to a USB drive through the Manage game menu.
Subnautica 2 is listed as Xbox Play Anywhere on the launch platform list, so this syncing should work out of the box if you have signed in correctly on both devices.
Cross-ecosystem: the part nobody wants to hear
A save on Steam stays on Steam. A save on Xbox stays inside the Microsoft account.
There is no Steam-to-Xbox save transfer. If you start on Steam and want to continue on Xbox, you start a new save.
There is no Epic-to-Steam or Epic-to-Xbox transfer either. Epic Cloud Saves only roundtrips inside the Epic launcher itself.
Unknown Worlds has not announced a cross-publisher save sync system. The original Subnautica also never got one across its full lifetime.
The closest thing to "playing across ecosystems" is buying once on Steam and once on Xbox, then accepting two separate progress lines. Game Pass Ultimate makes this less painful because you already own the Xbox side.
Backup advice for Early Access
EA patches change things. Sometimes they change the save format. A weekly habit avoids the worst outcome.
Manual backup before any patch
Copy the entire SaveGames folder before each major Subnautica 2 update. Patches sometimes change the save format, and a bad migration on launch day can lose hours.
Do not trust cloud as the only copy
Steam Cloud, Xbox cloud, and Epic Cloud Saves can all silently fail. Treat them as the convenient option, not the safety net. A local copy on a different drive is the actual safety net.
Name your backups by version
Rename backup folders with the patch number: SaveGames_EA-launch, SaveGames_patch-1.2, etc. When something breaks, you can step back without guessing which folder was which.
Test the restore before you need it
Once you have a backup, delete the cloud copy on a throwaway machine, restore the backup, and confirm the game loads it. A backup you have never restored is a hope, not a backup.
Questions people ask
Does Subnautica 2 support cloud saves on Steam?
Yes. Steam Cloud is enabled and the save file is small enough that storage caps will not be an issue. The original Subnautica used Steam Cloud the same way. You can confirm in the game properties window in your Steam library — there will be a Steam Cloud line under Saves.
Can I move my Steam save to Xbox?
No. Steam and Xbox use different account systems, different save formats, and Unknown Worlds has not built a cross-publisher save transfer for Subnautica 2. If you switch ecosystems, you start a new save. The same applies if you switch from Epic to Steam or Xbox.
I started on Xbox on PC and bought a Series X — do I have to start over?
No. Xbox Play Anywhere syncs the save between Xbox console, Xbox on PC, ROG Xbox Ally, and Xbox Cloud Gaming as long as you sign in with the same Microsoft account. This is the one cross-device path that works automatically.
Steam says there is a sync conflict when I launch. What do I do?
Steam shows you both timestamps. Pick the one that matches your last play session. If the cloud copy is older, you probably force-quit the game last time and Steam never uploaded the final state — keep the local copy. If the local copy is older, you played on another device and the cloud is right — keep the cloud copy.
My save file is corrupted. Will Steam Cloud have an older copy?
Sometimes. Steam Cloud keeps a small number of historical versions accessible through the web console at help.steampowered.com → Subnautica 2 → Steam Cloud. The retention is not guaranteed and you cannot pick a specific date — Steam shows what is available. This is why a manual backup is more reliable.
Do co-op saves sync separately from solo saves?
Unknown Worlds has not detailed every save-hosting rule yet, and how 4-player co-op sessions interact with cloud sync will be confirmed in the launch build. The original Subnautica 1 stored single-player saves only; any shared hosting model for Subnautica 2 is new behavior we will document here after May 14.
