Creatures

What kind of fauna to expect, broken into behavior categories. Names and specific stats fill in after we see them on screen.

Pre-launch read. Trailers have shown new fauna including a void-zone silhouette and reef-level swarms. Unknown Worlds has stayed quiet on names, which is typical for them. The page below covers behavioral categories; we will replace categories with concrete creature entries as they get scanned in EA.

Behavior categories to expect

Drawn from the original Subnautica and Below Zero patterns, with real names and stats added after launch.

Category What it looks like What to do about it
Peaceful drifters Small fish, jellyfish, schools that ignore you Scan fodder and food. Most of the early scan list will be this category. No threat unless you grab them aggressively.
Defensive fauna Reactive but not actively hunting Bite you if you swim through them, sting on close pass. Original Subnautica had Crashfish and Stalkers in this category. Watchable but not chasing you.
Mid-tier predators Sandshark-equivalent, Bonesharks, reef-zone hunters Will track and bite. Manageable with a knife or detour. The first thing that teaches you to time your dives.
Leviathan-class Massive, territorial, can one-shot a player Series staple. Reapers in Subnautica 1, Glow Whales and Shadow Leviathans in Below Zero. Subnautica 2 trailers have hinted at a void-zone equivalent. Avoid until vehicle upgrades are in.
Scan-only entities Story-relevant, not really "creatures" Architecture, pods, ancient relics, things that exist for narrative purposes. Scan, do not fight.
Co-op interaction Behavior may change with more players nearby Untested. Original Subnautica had no multiplayer, so creature AI in groups is genuinely new territory. We will update once we see how aggro splits.

Named creatures we are tracking

Names that have come up in pre-launch searches. Each linked page is a placeholder we update after May 14 once the in-game scanner database confirms or denies the name.

How to survive your first leviathan

The Subnautica series doesn't telegraph these well. Some practical habits:

Listen first. Most leviathans have audio tells before they appear. Volume up on launch night.
If the music shifts to something heavy, you have entered a hunting ground. Reverse course.
Save before any unfamiliar deep dive. Co-op respawn is generous but world saves can desync.
When a friend dies to one, do not rescue immediately. Regroup at base, return with two people and a vehicle.
