Oxygen & Depth Guide

Oxygen is the first real gate in Subnautica 2. This guide handles the searches around Air Tanks, Silver, Rebreather-style depth relief, biomods, and when the Tadpole becomes the better answer.

Quick answer: build the Standard Air Tank early, do not chase deep routes on starter oxygen, and treat Rebreather or depth-upgrade claims as current-build checks until the exact item path is verified.

Progression order

Stage Priority Practical rule
Starter oxygen Stay shallow Use it for Lifepod loops, nearby scans, Angel Comb, and shallow materials. Do not combine low oxygen with wreck interiors.
Standard Air Tank First mandatory upgrade This is the first oxygen goal most players should prioritize before deeper scans, longer resource loops, or fragment routes.
Oxygen biomods Comfort upgrade Welcome Center choices include oxygen-focused playstyle support. Pick it if you keep surfacing early.
Tadpole vehicle Route changer The Tadpole turns repeated mid-depth travel from a breath timer into a planned vehicle route.
Depth / pressure upgrades Patch-sensitive Do not publish exact depth numbers unless they are checked in the current build. Use route discipline until then.

Silver and Air Tank search intent

Players often search Silver because oxygen, electronics, and early upgrades point them toward a material they do not yet know how to route. That makes Silver a good page target, but not a place for fake certainty.

Depth mistakes to stop making

Entering a wreck with just enough oxygen to reach the door, then needing the same amount to leave.
Following a downward current because the resource looks close, then losing the vertical route home.
Starting a fragment route before placing a beacon or reading a landmark back to the Lifepod.
Treating Tadpole or Rebreather searches as one-step fixes instead of part of a route plan.

Questions people ask

What should I build first to improve oxygen in Subnautica 2?

Build the Standard Air Tank early, then use base power, biomod choices, beacons, and the Tadpole to widen your route options. Do not solve oxygen only by swimming faster.

Is there a Rebreather in Subnautica 2?

Players search for Rebreather-style depth relief because older Subnautica habits carry over. We are not publishing an exact Rebreather location until the current build confirms the item label and acquisition route.

Why do I keep dying on deeper routes?

Most early deaths are route math, not combat. You need enough oxygen to enter, scan or gather, recover from one mistake, and return. If a route only works perfectly, it is not stable yet.
