Buy on Steam if
- You want the game forever, not just during EA.
- You will mod, tweak config files, or use Steam Workshop content.
- You play offline often (camping, travel, flaky internet).
- Your co-op group is mostly on Steam already.
Cost, ownership, mods, and crossplay all on one page. Both routes let you play on day one of Early Access.
| Question | Steam | Game Pass |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | $29.99 USD one-time | $0 if you already pay Game Pass Ultimate ($16.99/mo) or PC Game Pass ($11.99/mo) |
| Best for | You want to own the game and keep it forever | You want to try EA cheap, or already subscribe |
| Long-term access | Permanent. Yours after purchase | Lasts as long as the game is in Game Pass. Could leave the catalog eventually |
| Co-op compatibility | Plays with other Steam players + Xbox/Game Pass via crossplay | Plays with Xbox console, Xbox on PC, and Steam friends via crossplay |
| Mods and tweaks | Easier. Direct file access, Steam Workshop support if Unknown Worlds enables it | Harder. Xbox app installs games in protected folders |
| Offline play | Yes | Limited. Requires periodic Game Pass authentication |
| Cloud streaming | No | Yes. Stream from browser, phone, tablet, or Xbox console |
First-party Krafton or Xbox-published titles tend to stick around in Game Pass, but no game stays forever. If you later buy on Xbox (console or PC), your Game Pass saves should follow through Xbox Play Anywhere, since you stay inside the same ecosystem. Saves between Xbox and Steam are not confirmed to transfer, so do not plan on "Game Pass now, Steam later" if save continuity matters to you.
Hardware, co-op, and storefront context if Steam vs Game Pass is only one of the questions.
