Death, reprinting and black box recovery

Reprinting returns you to your assigned Biobed. If carried supplies are missing after death, recover the black box at the death location. In multiplayer, a teammate can revive you before reprinting, allowing you to keep your equipment. The best recovery begins before the next dive: assign a useful bed and leave emergency supplies at home.

Set your return point before a long trip

Interact with the Biobed you intend to use until the interface confirms it is Assigned. Merely placing a Biobed does not tell you that the assignment interaction is complete. Check this when establishing a second base, especially before exploring the Alien Ruins or deeper caves.

The current Biobed building recipe is 3 Titanium, 1 Glass and 3 Fibrous Pulp. Keep assignment separate from Upgrade Biobed interactions that expand carrying capacity or quick slots. Use the inventory upgrade guide when your goal is more space rather than changing your return point.

Revive or reprint?

ChoiceResultWhen it helps
Teammate reviveYou retain equipment and regain a small amount of oxygen.A teammate can reach you and there is a nearby route to a proper oxygen supply.
Immediate reprintYou respawn at the assigned Biobed.Waiting in place will not produce a practical rescue, or you choose to return and prepare a recovery trip.
Solo recoveryReturn from the assigned bed and revisit the death-location black box.You need to retrieve supplies left at the site after reprinting.

A revive provides only a small oxygen refill. Move toward air immediately after getting up; staying in the same deep location can cause another emergency. Teammates should check their own oxygen and exit route before attempting a rescue.

Recover your black box without repeating the same mistake

  1. Check the place where you reprinted. Open your inventory, identify what is missing and collect spare supplies from storage.
  2. Fix the cause of the failed trip. Replace a depleted battery, refill oxygen, repair the vehicle or choose a shorter approach before leaving again.
  3. Travel back toward the death location. Use the black box signal when it is in range and your known landmarks for the approach. If the site is inside a cave, plan the exit before descending.
  4. Leave inventory space for recovered contents. Take survival equipment, but avoid filling every available slot with optional gathering supplies.
  5. Recover the box, then return to safety. Check your inventory before leaving. Treat material collection as another trip if oxygen or power is tight.

In our Solo Survival prologue walkthrough, carried Aid Kit and Water supplies moved to the death-location black box; revisiting their original shelves did not restore them. This is why checking the box is more useful than retracing every earlier pickup.

Use a Tracking Tag to help locate supplies

The Buddy System update added Tracking Tags. A tag placed in a carryable such as a locker works as a short-range beacon. If a tag is in your hand or inventory when you reprint, it increases black box range. Put one with the supplies you need to locate, rather than leaving every tag in distant base storage.

Greater signal range does not recover the contents automatically or shorten the swim. Keep a landmark-based return route as well, particularly when the death location is beyond your present equipment limits.

Keep a recovery kit at your base

If a black box sits beyond your current oxygen or vehicle limit, make the needed upgrade before retrying. A second rushed trip can leave you farther from a successful recovery.
