Before leaving
Unload materials for unrelated recipes, choose the tools for the next route, and budget the exact return haul. A Scanner Station needs two Silver from scratch; an air tank can need another two for its own recipe.
Inventory and equipment
A full backpack and a crowded tool bar need different solutions. Use the right upgrade so your next trip actually solves the problem you left home with.

Unload into base lockers, bring Portable Storage, or look for a permanent inventory upgrade.
The Colonist Bunker 1 BioBed panel expands the quick-slot bar from five to six.
Prepare a Portable Locker and reserve room for the return materials before leaving.
Use Bioscanner creature research and the Biomod interface. These are different slots.
Permanent inventory upgrades use upgrade terminals. The Biohacking Chamber category on a Scanner Station provides a useful way to search for them once you have a powered base. Select a contact and use its world signal, distance and depth information to plan the trip. A contact can require a different approach from the direction it appears on the map.
Read the terminal reward when you arrive. Backpack capacity, quick-access positions and passive Biomod slots solve different limitations. Finish the interaction and check the relevant inventory or loadout screen before leaving. Merely finding or scanning a nearby object is not the same as applying its upgrade.
If you cannot reach another terminal yet, storage is the immediate alternative. Keep construction materials in named base lockers, carry the next recipe's shopping list, and leave room for the resource you are going out to collect. Emptying your backpack before departure can be more useful than bringing every tool you own.
The Colonist Bunker 1 route combines Silver gathering, Repair Tool progress and a quick-slot upgrade. Our route shows the tool bar expanding from five positions to six after using the bunker BioBed panel.
This upgrade is especially useful once Scanner, Air Bladder, Survival Multitool, Flashlight and Habitat Builder compete for quick access. It does not make a full backpack able to accept another pickup.
The current Portable Locker recipe uses four Titanium with the Habitat Builder, after blueprint access. Pack it for a route where moving a container is worth the extra handling, and place your essential oxygen, healing and return supplies where you can reach them.

Buddy System added the Tracking Tag. Put one in a carryable such as a locker to use it as a short-range beacon. This is a tag function, not an automatic beacon on every container.
At home, arrange and label lockers by the jobs you repeat: tools, electronics, base construction and food. The base-building guide shows the locker placement and naming workflow. A planned storage stop makes the next trip quicker even before you find another permanent upgrade.
A Tracking Tag in your hand or inventory when you reprint increases black-box range. The recovery guide explains assignment and retrieval. Keep a separate home reserve so it is still available after an unsuccessful expedition.
Before packing extra batteries, use the charging routine to distinguish charged spares from depleted cells. More carried items only help when they are ready to use.
Use permanent inventory upgrade terminals for backpack progression, and use base lockers or Portable Storage when the immediate problem is carrying a gathering haul. A Scanner Station can help locate Biohacking Chambers. Read the reward on the terminal because inventory capacity and quick slots are separate upgrades.
Follow the Angel Comb route into Colonist Bunker 1 and use its BioBed panel before leaving. Our illustrated route shows the quick-slot bar expanding from five to six.
It adds a quick-access position for an item or tool. Use a backpack upgrade or storage container when the problem is a full inventory.
The current PC build 128456 Portable Locker construction recipe uses four Titanium with the Habitat Builder. Its blueprint access is a separate requirement.
Buddy System added the Tracking Tag. Put one in a carryable container such as a locker to use it as a short-range beacon. An untagged container does not gain this beacon behavior.
Set a useful Biobed and prepare room for recovered contents.
Carry charged reserves instead of a bag of depleted batteries.
Keep ready food and water separate from materials for processing.
The illustrated red-hatch route, Silver pickups and BioBed upgrade.
Build a Scanner Station and use its exploration filters.
Four Titanium, blueprint access and Habitat Builder construction.
Place, arrange and label lockers before the next gathering trip.
Keep passive abilities separate from backpack and quick-slot upgrades.
Tools, water, storage and an oxygen-first order for your early trips.
