Growbeds and useful plants in Subnautica 2

Use Growbeds to keep useful plants near your base, and reserve planting material before processing your whole harvest. Necrolei Cysts can be planted following the Buddy System update, making them a useful choice when you need Strong Acid. Start with the material chain that is delaying your next craft, then expand the bed as your needs grow.

Start with a small, accessible planting area

  1. Scan a Growbed to obtain its associated planting unlocks. Check the building menu for the Growbed and the plant you want to establish.
  2. Place the bed where you can reach the full plant. Leave access around the harvestable parts and avoid crowding the base entrance or vehicle route.
  3. Bring the planting ingredients shown for that plant. Some entries use a collected plant material; others use Fibrous Pulp or additional minerals.
  4. Plant a small first batch. Check the resulting harvest interaction before filling the whole area with copies.
  5. Keep a reserve in storage. Separate planting supplies from material intended for food, medicine or processing.

What to reserve for planting

These are the ingredients for establishing each plant entry, not a promise of how many items a harvest produces. Select the plant's current building-menu entry before collecting a large batch.

Necrolei Cysts and Strong Acid

The current direct Strong Acid recipe uses 2 Necrolei Cysts. If you return with three cysts, reserving one for planting leaves two for one craft. That is an ingredient budget; the planted cyst does not supply the next batch instantly. Wait for the plant's harvest interaction and collect the available material before planning another production run.

Use the Necrolei Cyst guide for gathering, then keep the growing area close to your processing routine. The alternate Strong Acid route uses 1 Sulfur and 1 Gold, useful if you already have those materials from a hot-zone trip. Compare your stored ingredients before spending rare minerals that are also needed for electronics or power.

For the alternate route, see Sulfur and Gold. For early plant-based crafting, the Lucifer Rotsac page explains why preserving a sample matters alongside Rubber and Grease production.

Harvesting and moving a planted bed

Approach the harvestable part of a plant and check the interaction prompt. Crowded plants make it harder to select the intended target, so space a new bed for comfortable access rather than only visual density. Collect useful output before rearranging the area, and keep reserve planting ingredients before dismantling a bed or the base supporting it.

The Buddy System update fixed several Growbed issues, including mismatched harvest hitboxes, multiplayer clients being unable to move some plants, and plants remaining after refunding their supporting base. If a plant cannot be selected or moved as expected, check that your session is on the current game version before repeatedly dismantling surrounding pieces.

Choose plants by the next supply problem

You can keep exploring while a planting develops. Carry enough finished food, water and batteries for the next trip instead of relying on a harvest becoming available at a particular moment.
