Food and Water: From Starter Supplies to Long Trips

Updated

Use the Lifepod's starter food while establishing a Water Slug supply, then unlock Digestion to make local food useful. Before a long trip, plan food and drinking water separately: filling the hunger meter does not ensure you have enough hydration for the journey home.

Opening survival loop

  1. Open the starting supply locker. The first-hour walkthrough shows three Nutrient Blocks and an Aid Kit. Each block restores 40 food; eat according to the hunger you need to restore rather than consuming them all at departure.
  2. Catch a Water Slug and return to the Fabricator. One Water Slug makes one Water. The illustrated starter route shows this restoring 40 water, making it a practical first hydration loop.
  3. Follow NOA's Anita black-box lead to the Angel Comb. Interact with the central pod to unlock Digestion. Confirm it in the PDA's Adaptations tab before treating local flora and fauna as your main food supply.
  4. Prepare local food back at the Fabricator. Catch fish during short gathering loops, craft the corresponding cooked food, and leave with both food and water replenished.

If eating local food still leaves you struggling with digestive incompatibility, check the adaptation first. Collecting more of the same fish does not complete the Angel Comb interaction. Keep some starter food available while you finish that route.

Compare the supply recipes

SupplyIngredients per craftWhen it fits the trip
Water1 Water Slug at the FabricatorOpening hydration with a simple collection loop.
Water from Fibrous Pulp3 Fibrous Pulp at the ProcessorAn alternative when plant material is plentiful.
Isotonic Water1 Flash Slug + 1 SaltA crafted drink when you have both ingredients available.
Cooked Halfmoon or Cooked Geordie1 matching raw fishA straightforward cooked-food loop after Digestion.
Nutrient Block1 Biofuel Block + 1 SaltMake additional rations once the processing chain is established.

Other fish also have their own cooked recipes, including Bluemoon, Harvestmoon, Quadrate, Electric Geordie, Hoverthorn and Blackthorn. Compare the food and water effects shown on the item you are about to consume. A food with a hydration penalty needs a separate drink in your packing plan; do not assume every cooked or raw fish has the same values.

Reserve Salt before processing supplies

Salt from Chap's cave serves several competing recipes. One Power Cell uses 1 Salt, one Isotonic Water uses 1 Salt, and one Nutrient Block uses 1 Salt. Preparing one of each means collecting 3 Salt, plus their other ingredients.

If your immediate goal is a Tadpole, reserve its Power Cell ingredient before making a batch of drinks or rations. Plain Water from Water Slugs does not use Salt, so it can cover hydration while your small early Salt haul goes toward vehicle power.

Halfmoons also have an industrial use: the Processor turns two into Grease. Set aside enough food before allocating fish to equipment materials. Likewise, check your base's fuel supply before turning every Biofuel Block into a ration.

Keep edible supplies out of the fuel pile

The Buddy System update fixed Algae Blocks and Nutrient Blocks being unusable as Bioreactor fuel. This makes food storage and fuel storage worth separating: an edible ration can become base fuel when you still need it for an expedition.

For a longer-term supply routine, connect growing food and useful plants with your Bioreactor fuel plan. Keep the next trip's ready meals and water reserved before spending the surplus on processing or power.
