Refunds

Subnautica 2 Refund Policy

Same refund rules as any other game on each store. Early Access does not change the windows, and Subnautica 2 is not a special case. The differences are in how each store handles edge cases and how you actually submit the request.

In short. Steam and Epic refund automatically if you are inside 14 days and under 2 hours played. Xbox uses the same window but a human reviews. Game Pass is a subscription so you cancel the sub, not the game. Outside those windows, the case has to be specific (cannot launch, crashes, etc.) and the success rate drops fast.

Steam: edge case

Outside the 14-day or 2-hour window, Steam reviews case by case. Granted less often for cheaper games like a $29.99 Early Access title, but technical issues, missing features, or duplicate purchases can still qualify.

Xbox / Microsoft Store: edge case

Xbox does not list a hard 2-hour cap, but "minimal playtime" in practice means under 2 hours of real game time, not menu time. Game Preview status does not change the policy.

Epic Games Store: edge case

Epic only allows one refund per transaction. Buying a $29.99 EA game, refunding, then re-buying disqualifies a second refund on the same SKU.

Game Pass (Ultimate / PC): edge case

If you only subscribed to play Subnautica 2 and decide to stop, cancel before the next billing date. You keep access until that date, then lose it the moment the subscription lapses.

What changes because it is Early Access

Less than you might hope. The store-page disclaimer is doing a lot of work here.

Early Access status does not change Steam refund rules

Steam policy explicitly says EA games are eligible for refunds under the same 14-day / 2-hour rule. Unknown Worlds cannot opt out of this.

"Game is unfinished" is not a valid refund reason after the window

Buying an EA title means accepting it is unfinished. Steam support will reject post-window refunds that cite "missing features the developers said would come later" — this is exactly what Early Access warns against on the store page.

Crash bugs and unplayable performance can extend the window

If you cannot launch the game at all, or it crashes within minutes every session, Steam support sometimes grants a refund even past 2 hours. The case has to be specific: error logs, repro steps, and what you tried. Generic "runs badly" complaints usually fail.

Game Pass is the lowest-risk way to try Early Access

A one-month PC Game Pass at $11.99 lets you play 100+ hours of Subnautica 2 before deciding. If you stay subscribed, the breakeven against buying is roughly 2.5 months. If you cancel, you lose access immediately.

Steam refund, step by step

  1. Open help.steampowered.com and sign in with the account that bought the game.
  2. Click Games & Software, then pick Subnautica 2 from the list.
  3. Choose I would like a refund. The form auto-fills purchase date and playtime.
  4. Pick a refund destination — Steam wallet (instant) or original payment method (3-7 business days).
  5. Submit. Steam usually responds within 24 hours when the auto-rules apply, 1-2 days otherwise.

Xbox refund, step by step

  1. Open support.microsoft.com and sign in with the Microsoft account that holds the purchase.
  2. Navigate to Xbox → Subscriptions and billing → Request an Xbox refund.
  3. Pick Subnautica 2 from the recent purchases list.
  4. Explain the reason. Microsoft does not auto-approve — a human reviews within 72 hours.
  5. If approved, the refund posts to the original payment method within 3-10 business days.

Questions people ask

Can I refund Subnautica 2 on Steam if I have played more than 2 hours?

Probably not automatically. Steam reviews post-2-hour refunds case by case, and a $29.99 Early Access title is on the harder end. You have a real chance if you can show the game does not launch, crashes constantly, or has a feature missing that was promised in marketing. You do not have a chance if your reason is "I changed my mind" or "I expected more content".

I bought on Xbox but want to cancel — what counts as "minimal playtime"?

Microsoft does not publish a number, but in practice it means under 2 hours of actual gameplay, not menu time. If you launched the game once for 20 minutes and decided it is not for you, you are well inside the window. If you played a full afternoon and want out, Xbox support will usually decline.

Does Early Access give me special refund rights?

No. Every storefront treats Early Access the same as a full release for refund purposes. The 14-day / 2-hour windows apply identically. The store page warning ("buy only if you want to play it in its current state") is the legal hook that lets stores reject "the game is unfinished" refunds after the window.

I subscribed to Game Pass just to try Subnautica 2 and want my money back — can I?

Usually only the current month. Microsoft support will sometimes pro-rate an annual Game Pass plan if you cancel early, but they almost never refund a monthly fee mid-cycle. The cleanest answer is to cancel before the next billing date, keep access through the paid month, and stop there.

I refunded Subnautica 2 — can I rebuy it later?

Yes on Steam and Xbox without issue. Epic only allows one refund per SKU, so a refund there is a one-way door. If you think you might want to come back, refund on Steam or use Game Pass rather than refunding on Epic.

What about pre-purchase refunds? I pre-ordered and the game has not launched yet.

Steam allows full pre-purchase refunds until the moment the game unlocks for play, with no 2-hour or 14-day requirement. Xbox is similar. Epic also allows pre-order cancellations before launch. The window closes once the game becomes playable on your account, not when the launch timer hits zero on the store page.
