Where to find Salt

The early Salt route is the small cave beside Chap's habitat, roughly 200 meters southeast of the Lifepod. Look for the pillar with a standing light near the Coral Crabs. Reserve 1 Salt for each Power Cell before spending the rest on drinks or Glass.

Find Chap's cave and collect Salt

NOA sends you toward Chap's black box after Anita's, making this a convenient collection stop during the early story. The resource is in the cave itself: you do not need to reach the volcanic region for your first Power Cell's Salt.

  1. Start southeast from the Lifepod. Pass the Welcome Center on your right and continue down toward the area with two pillars and a large Coral Crab on the left.
  2. Look to the right for the lit pillar. A standing light marks the pillar whose base has the small cave entrance.
  3. Check your air before entering. Identify the opening and approach with enough oxygen to search and retrace the same path.
  4. Search the cave near Chap's habitat. Salt appears as a cluster of pale orange, block-like crystals. The described early route has two pieces in the cave; collect what is present instead of extending the search beyond a safe turnaround.
  5. Return along the entrance route. Recovering the black box and gathering Salt pair naturally, but do not stay inside just to fill every inventory slot.

Salt is a pickup resource on this trip. A mining tool is not the reason to postpone visiting the cave. Oxygen, a clear route out and enough free inventory space are the practical preparations.

What to save Salt for

A Power Cell needs 1 Salt, 2 Basic Batteries and 1 Strong Acid. If you are preparing for a Tadpole, set aside that Salt before turning the rest into consumables. Two Salt can cover two Power Cells, or one cell plus one Isotonic Water.

Isotonic Water combines 1 Salt with 1 Flash Slug; a Nutrient Block combines 1 Salt with 1 Biofuel Block. The Processor can also turn 2 Salt into Glass. For a first small haul, that Glass recipe competes directly with both your vehicle-power and food supplies; use Quartz for Glass when you have more of it available.

Where to look after the early cave

Other collection areas include deeper ground around the Great Jaw southwest of the Lifepod and the volcanic region to the east. In the volcanic area, search the sand and caves only after unlocking Heat Tolerance. Those are useful destinations when you already have another reason to travel there.

If Chap's cave is empty, bank what you already have and choose the next route based on your equipment. Do not spend an entire oxygen cycle waiting for a pickup to reappear. A deeper Salt trip needs its own air plan, even if your only missing recipe ingredient is a single piece.

The nearby Sulfur pillar is a useful companion stop on the early southeast run. Keep the budgets separate: Sulfur can finish your Repair Tool, while the Salt is worth reserving for the Power Cell or drink you actually plan to craft next.
